Fortaleza de Peniche is on the southern end of the Peniche peninsula, at Campo da República. The complex sits on a rocky escarpment overlooking Ribeira Velha, also called Portinho, and connects at its other end to Alto da Vila.

The fort’s position gives it a clear relationship to the surrounding landscape: the rocky rise, the waterfront below and the peninsula beyond. The official museum lists Campo da República as the access address.

What is the history of the fortress?

Fortaleza de Peniche developed over several phases, then became a place of imprisonment for political opponents of Portugal’s Estado Novo dictatorship.

Fortification work began in 1557, when King João III ordered Luís de Ataíde to build a bastion and tower at Alto da Vela. The Round Bastion was completed in 1558 and is attributed to Diogo Teles.

Work on the wider fortress under master builder Gonçalo de Torralva began in 1572 and was interrupted in 1578. The fort was classified as a National Monument by decree dated 22 March 1938.

From 1934, the fortress was used as a prison for opponents of the dictatorship. Political prisoners were released on 27 April 1974, following the Carnation Revolution. On 27 April 2017, the Portuguese Government decided to create the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom at the fortress.

The National Museum of Resistance and Freedom is located inside Fortaleza de Peniche. The fortress itself is also a setting for understanding how the site’s role changed over time, from a defensive structure to a prison and then a museum.

The museum’s first visit guide, “A Fortaleza de Peniche,” presents the fortress’s history in the Chapel of Santa Bárbara. That gives you a starting point for placing the fort’s construction and later history in context as you visit.
